Watch out! Turmeric stains. Here’s how to treat it.
Turmeric will stain anything it touches. Anything. I’m guilty of ruining the carpet in a rental by spilling a golden milk latte. Oops! Another time, while working at a juice shot years ago, I spilled a gallon of turmeric juicer all over the floor. I’m pretty sure the grout still has a tinge of yellow.
Turmeric is high in curcumin, giving it its beautiful golden-orange color. The curcumin compound quickly binds to surfaces, fabric, utensils, and skin causing a stain that is a bright yellow color. If you do stain something from turmeric, try to treat it right away. Here are several methods to get the stain out.
Fabric: First rinse the fabric with cold water, then pre-treat with a stain remover. Next, let it soak in a vinegar solution. Make the solution 1 to 1 with white distilled vinegar and water. Allow it to soak for 30-60 minutes. After that, wash the fabric in the washer.
Surfaces (countertops or cutting boards): If there is a turmeric stain on a countertop or cutting board, treat it immediately. First, rinse or wipe the surface with cold water. Next, make a paste with baking soda and water. To make the paste use 1/4 cup water and 1 cup baking soda. Coat the stain with the baking soda paste, then allow it to rest for 15-60 minutes. Finally, cut a lemon in half, rub the fresh cut side on the stain, and paste. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away with a damp cloth.
Hands or skin: Wash your hands immediately. If the stain does not remove, then apply a small amount of olive oil or coconut oil, allow it to soak in for 15 minutes, then wash your hands again.
What to do if Turmeric stains your blender.
It seems impossible to get a turmeric stain out of a blender, but I can assure you it’s not. To get the stain out hand wash the blender, do not put it in the dishwasher. Then let it rest in the sun or under a UV light for several days or until the stain has lifted. The UV light bleaches the plastic and removes the stain.
